New Guy - Thought I'd introduce myself
Greetings:
I am a new member here and I thought I'd introduce myself as you all are not familiar with me or my work. I do a monthly article for the ICMJ Mining Journal – a prospector's magazine. I do articles on prospecting, gold geology, small scale mining and related topics. I have metal detectors, and use a portable dredge in the rivers and streams, so there is information on that. I look forward to talking with you guys about propecting for gold. I have a website with a series of articles, information and photos related to prospecting. The site has info on detecting for gold, as well as dredging and even a little on dry washing. There is also information and maps on the gold placer fields in the state of Nevada, as well as information on prospecting in the state of California. I hope to continue to add more information and prospecting reference material in the coming months. If you guys have an interest in seeing some of the mining and prospecting going on in the western US, this website would be a good place to look. The point really is about sharing information and experiences with my friends. I have long been interested in the local turquoise here, so there is an extensive section on turquoise and the local turquoise mines, including a virtual tour of some of my turquoise mining claims. I actually own three old turquoise mines in located here in Nevada – I have no employees, and the mines are not worked on an ongoing basis – I visit them several times a year, beat on rocks with hammer and chisel and collect the turquoise rough I need for my uses. Through the website I can share a "virtual tour" with history, pictures and other information these mines that you may find interesting: http://nevada-outback-gems.com/mine_...oise_mines.htm Hope you enjoy the site. Well, it IS a lot harder to eat a friend than a stranger - unless she is REALLY cute! :Sorry: Welcome to GIM Reno, nice to have you along for the ride! |
Re: New Guy - Thought I'd introduce myself
Welcome aboard...
...as long as you aren't just using GIM as a feeder for your Google AdSense clicks down there at the bottom of your site. Or to gain PageRank via backlinks. That's not so welcome here. And some of us are aware of SEO techniques and made-for-AdSense sites and postings. First glance of your site seems pretty nice and some ads to help with the costs are OK. But we'll be watching. Yeah, I'm the cynical one. But it's been tried before by those who never really contributed much. LG :cool1: |

In all honesty, I am not here to promote my site, so I will come clean and admit the truth - I am making the grandiose sum of about $1 per day from my web advertisements. Really. After deducting the cost of the IP host, well, you can see that the forced laborers in China are making more per day than I am. Its not much of a commercial enterprise, so it better be fun (and it is - I do enjoy it). Its OK because I do have a real job that pays the bills. I appreciate that you are willing to evaluate me on my posts - I am a member of several gold prospecting forums and a major contributer to all of them. But I really am here to talk prospecting, so lets do that. Its a hobby / passion / occupation / interest Ive been working at for almost 30 years. I bought my first dredge from Keene in 1978. I spend several weeks each summer (about 4 or 5 days at a time as I am not retired and I do have to work). I actually used to work in the mining industry, and have a degree in Mining Engineering, but I left it because its so darn unstable. So now I hit the hills and dredge or metal detect or pan, etc. for nuggets. Sometimes I do pretty well. Sometimes I dont do so well. It balances out. I am interested in the price of gold and silver as well. I am invested in gold and silver I dont have massive amounts of money, but I have a good portion of my diversification into the precious metals (and not just the nuggets I have found). I have posted here because prospecting is something I know, but I am also very interested in the investing side of these forums as well. Chris |
Re: New Guy - Thought I'd introduce myself
Isn't there a shortage of mining engineers these days?
Maybe it's hard to uproot a family and make a change. Funny how life takes you down different paths sometimes. I figured you probably weren't a total AdSense hound because those guys usually put their ad blocks right up at the top and top left, in your face. But we've seen those guys come and go, so I was just making the point. I'm going to look at your site because it seems cool and has pitchers. Maybe you'll get a $2 day. LG :cool1: |
Re: New Guy - Thought I'd introduce myself
Heya Chris; I'm the only miner /prospector on this site to speak of. Ive tried to bring it up a little but didnt go anywhere. Waste of time, unless ya like to tinker.
Dredging is a fantastic oportunity. where you can go out, if your accomplished at it , work about 6 hours and take home 100$ worth of gold pretty much every day + bonuses. Pretty depresssion proof as they come . Back in the depression days the hills were full of hand miners. What ya have here is aquality bunch of middle class to upper middle class to wealthy people. Some retirees, some stock traders , a lot of savers , workin stiffs etc.. havent met any jerks except for maybe one. A no bs group and dont worry you'll get use to em..... The new theme song came as a real natural; upper right corner --'theme' , says it all. Anyway, I want to go back to the hills so bad I can taste it, I'm gonna do it. F I . Happy mining Pard.............. ( a little warning tho , dont f--- with Tn Andy) |

Re: New Guy - Thought I'd introduce myself
LC - Yep, there is a shortage of mining engineers and I probably could get a job in the industry again - but I've got the golden handcuffs - I've been working for the county here as an engineer so long that if I leave now I'll be flushing a great retirement down the toilet. If I wait just a few more years, I'll be a lot better off. So I am going to play it smart and stay put for now.
Nuggethunter - A prospecting forum with few expereinced prospectors? It did kind of seem that way reading through the old threads. Well, thats OK. Perhaps I can spread a bit of the "fever". I try to post a few of my adventures from time to time. Finding you own gold can be a lot of fun. I guess with the price of gold heading upward, the prospect of $100 per day dredging is getting easier and easier. Chris |
Re: New Guy - Thought I'd introduce myself
:yippee: This is more like a SILVER FORUM ! LOL .
Everything . Subjects , even gold for that matter is aimed , pointed at , contemplates the effect on THE PRICE OF SILVER Found an 1850 silver half dollar in my sluice box one day, dredging where the old timers dumped there long toms into the American below Cherokee bar. Had nuggets falling out of the material, did 24 ounces in that stretch, took out the river bank to bank 400'. SILVER , THE NEXT BONANZA |
Re: New Guy - Thought I'd introduce myself
Welcome....I look forward to reading your posts. I am here to learn and absorb as much info as I can. Your experienced ideas will be welcomed. Just wish your signature was East Tennessee Chris instead of Reno Chris so that your stories could be better related to my stomping ground. Waylon

Re: New Guy - Thought I'd introduce myself
Waylon - unfortunatly, my exploits are confined to the western US.
Nuggethunter - Nevada produces a whole lot of silver. My new avitar shows me at a Nevada Silver mine with over a ton of nevada silver and around 20 pounds of nevada gold (mixed in with the raw silver). The picture was taken at the Coeur Rochester mine in Pershing County, Nevada. Chris |
Re: New Guy - Thought I'd introduce myself
Waylon...
Have you found any TN colors in areas other than along a line near the southern part of the TN/NC state line? |
Re: New Guy - Thought I'd introduce myself
Welcome Chris! We have some folks here who prospect, and other who I supsect believe like most folks, that the 'ole-timers got all the gold. We have high quality gold (22-23 Kt.) here in the Eastern Belt that runs down from MD just west of DC, SW through VA, NC, Northwestern SC, Eastern edge of TN, North GA, and into the East central area of AL.
Colors are easy to find...the challenge of course is locating concentrations. Lots of micron, fine, and medium colors, not infrequent pickers, and some good nuggets. Most deposits aren't anything like the ones found in CA and other western states, and the nuggets are in general comparably smaller, but the "chase" is the same: commeraderie, fresh air, good exercise, and the great outdoors. One story of interest to me is told about an 'ole-timer who produced a poke of high quality diamonds reportedly found not too far from what was then the area of Charlotte, NC...who alas, supposedly died without revealing the location. And I'm sure you're aware of the diamonds we have in AR and the Emeralds and other gemstones that are indigenes to Western NC. Ahhhh the "chase"...one never knows what this pan or screen of dirt or clean-up is going reveal eh? Around here all the colors and stones that my wife finds are hers, and all the colors and stones I find are hers too! Love those big rocks and benches! |
Re: New Guy - Thought I'd introduce myself
Welcome, I'a new guy around here myself. I live in Ireland and I have gotten bitten by the metal detector bug, although I have recently been researching the gold contained in quartz deposits in some of our mountain ranges. I've been dying to get out and do some gold prospecting as I'm sure I would love that hobby as well.
